The Space

Fifth Street Bridge over I85

A (relatively) recently renovated space on campus, this park-like area situated right next to Tech Square is a fairly under-used space with a great deal of potential. It currently is used for private recreational activities (Frisbee, dog walking, etc.), tailgating on football game days, and occasionally for large-scale events (Taste of Atlanta, Flicks on Fifth, etc.). Having considered several other options first, including the Campanile and Skiles Courtyard, it was determined that our space should be one currently underutilized with a great deal of potential and a high flow of traffic. The Fifth Street Bridge was intended to be a pleasant green space in midtown for Tech students and other locals, but it is still primarily used as just a bridge from East Campus to Tech Square. Our goal is to transform this unique space into a place people can use, or a place people want to visit because of it's features. While our ultimate goal is still somewhat unclear, the seemingly limitless possibilities of our space—situated between residential campus housing, above an interstate, an near a commercial and business district—should provide us ample options in terms of designing an augmented reality system.
